The 124th running of the National Championship for Bird Dogs began on Monday, February 13, 2023, at Ames Plantation, and the women of Hickory Valley were ready and willing to serve coffee and treats to those waiting for the first brace of the day to begin.

The women of Hickory Valley, and those from other neighboring communities who come out to help, are continuing a tradition started long before the heated and cooled Rueben S. Rhea Sr. Memorial Clubhouse was constructed. A photo displayed on the counter reminds those in attendance of a time when the women gathered in a tent to provide hospitality to field trial enthusiasts, which attend from all over the world.

Community members and local churches, including members from the First Baptist Church of Grand Junction, donate baked goods, treats and sausage biscuits each morning.

The National Championship for Bird Dogs has been held on the Ames Plantation since 1915 and is conducted each year beginning on the second or third Monday in February with a usual entry of about 36 English Pointers and /or English Setters competing. Several thousand field trial enthusiasts from all over the world attend the event each year.
