Work Before Success Basketball Program Helps Keep Athletes in Shape (During the Summer)
In the off season, many athletes slow down their workout routine and even more so during the summer months. Friends and basketball lovers Quincy Bowers, a Bolivar Central High School (BCHS) assistant basketball coach, and Adarius Murphy came up with the idea of a way to help local athletes stay in shape and be productive during the summertime with their Work Before Success basketball program.
“We just now started doing it,” said Murphy. “We try to get in the gym as much as we can to allow kids to come in and work. We don’t want them wasting time being lazy or getting out of shape.”
Bowers and Murphy opened the program to players in the county as well as surrounding counties. The athletes are not only high school players, but also recently graduated seniors and current college players. Some of the notable players participating include athletes who earned basketball scholarships, Quan Lax, former Mr. Basketball Winner Toris Woods, Tre Ward, Isaiah Perry, Walter Peggs, and RJ Robinson to name a few.
“We work on many different skills like shooting drills, cone drills, defensive drills, and 5 vs. 5 for a full court basketball game at the end to challenge each one of the players,” said Murphy.
The Work Before Success basketball program meets twice a week in the Bolivar Central High School gym. Murphy hopes to continue doing the program throughout the summer, which he refers to a program he and Bowers do as “a hometown deed for us at the moment” for youth in the community.
