Central High School FFA Chapter Helps Keep Roads Clean

The Bolivar Central High School (BCHS) National Future Farmers of America Organization (FFA) chapter student members made a difference on the road in Downtown Bolivar on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, as they attacked a problem that plagues our county: litter.

Under the direction of FFA Chapter advisor Aaron Gibson, the two-mile stretch of road from the Luez Theater to the Hatchie River received a cleaner appearance after the team of students completed their quarterly cleanup project for the school year. The effort of the students is part of the TDOT Adopt-A-Highway Program that has encouraged citizens across the State since 1989 to take part in collecting litter “helping produce cleaner roadsides, reduce maintenance costs, and boost litter prevention awareness in the Volunteer State”.

Gibson sees the overall benefit of the students participating in the program.

“It gets litter off the side of roads and makes our community look better,” said Mr. Gibson. “I hope students learn that littering on the roads is an issue that they can influence.”

Four of the team of students who were out picking up trash expressed how proud they are to be members of the BCHS FFA chapter noting the learning experiences it provides through agricultural education.

FFA members are future farmers, chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers, and premier professionals in many career fields. Membership in the organization is open to students in fifth through twelfth grades, and college.
