School Board Sets 2024-2025 School Calendar

The Hardeman County Board of Education held its first regularly scheduled meeting of the new year on Thursday, January 11, 2024. One of the items on the agenda was approving a calendar for the 2024-2025 school year.

“Every few years we have a calendar that doesn’t fall very nicely and this one did not,” shared Director of Schools Dr. Christy Smith. “At the end of the day our students have to be here 180 days and our teachers work 200. We have not added days to either one of them.”

Chairman Bobby Henderson presented two options to the Board. Option One gave two more days off during Christmas break and Option Two gave two additional days off during Thanksgiving break.

“At the end of the day, do you go the two days at Thanksgiving and get a longer Christmas or do you take Thanksgiving off and get a shorter Christmas. We still have to go 180 days for students and 200 days for staff,” said Dr. Smith as she elaborated on the two options. “It basically comes down to those two days. It’s either two days at Christmas or two days at Thanksgiving.”

After discussing the options, Crisp stated he felt people would rather have more days off during the Christmas break. The board agreed. A motion was made by Crisp to approve Option One. The motion was seconded by Bodiford and approved unanimously by the Board.

Other items on the agenda included recognizing Lisa Raines as School Nurse Administrator of the Year, policy updates, approval of a contract to begin renovations at Central High School, and committee reports.
