New Teachers at Bolivar Middle and Toone Elementary Receive Minigrants
Shannon Rodgers, a seventh and eighth grade math teacher at Toone Elementary School (TES), and Anna Nelling, an eighth-grade science teacher at Bolivar Middle School (BMS), were the proud recipients of classroom minigrants awarded by the Beta Sigma Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) during its “Christmas in January” brunch that was held on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
Since 2012, the chapter has participated in the Support for Early Career Educators, a project from the DKG International organization. In September, the chapter gave small gift bags to all the new teachers with a theme of “You’ve Got This Year in the Bag”. Those gifts now follow with the minigrants to two new teachers who were chosen by the chapter. The chapter members recommended outstanding new teachers, and then voted on which teachers would receive the mini grants.
“Typically, we provide something small for new teachers in the county as well as provide one or two minigrants each year,” said chapter parliamentarian Dorrie Powell. “The minigrants help new teachers such as Shannon and Anna who often need extra classroom supplies or instructional materials as they try new lessons and activities with their students.”
Ms. Nelling and Ms. Rodgers work with students in critical STEM areas and the minigrants will allow them to purchase items to use in their classrooms for hands-on materials.
“Our chapter is delighted to support and encourage these new teachers who seem to be doing an exceptional job for Hardeman County students,”said Ms Powell.
