Middleton’s Mariah McKinnie Crowned Runner-Up in Miss Bronze West Tennessee Scholarship Pageant
Middleton High School senior Mariah McKinnie was named 2nd Runner-Up in the Jackson (TN) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s 64th annual Miss Bronze West Tennessee Scholarship Pageant that was held on Saturday, March 23, 2024. Mariah, along with four other contestants competed to be awarded scholarship money for post-secondary education.
Mariah, the daughter of Billy and Anita McKinnie of Grand Junction, Tennessee, plans to attend Northwest Community College in Senatobia, Mississippi and major in pre-med. She has high hopes of becoming an anesthesiologist. Mariah’s school and community activities include the National Beta Club, HOSA, senior class president, cheer co-captain, and she was a grand marshal of the 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade.
The Miss Bronze West Tennessee Scholarship Pageant was founded more than 60 years ago during segregation so African American young ladies had the opportunity to compete for scholarship funds for college. This year, the pageant was open to high school seniors residing in the chapter’s service areas of Hardeman County, Haywood County, Madison County, and the southern portion of State Route 420 in Gibson County. Other winners included Nevaeh Coleman, Miss Bronze 2024 and Miss Congeniality, and Jewelz Walker, 1st Runner-Up.
