Obituary: James “Sonny” Smith

James “Sonny” Smith ~ February 17, 1942 – September 14 2024 (age 81)

James “Sonny” Smith, born on February 17, 1942, in McNairy County, Tennessee, passed away on September 14 2024, in Bolivar, Tennessee. He was a dedicated and industrious man who left a lasting impact through his work and passions.

Throughout his career, Sonny worked at several notable businesses, including Harmon Automotive in Bolivar and United Foods in Rossville, where he served as a production manager. He later held the position of purchasing manager at Moltan for 20 years before retiring in 2000. Driven by his love for crafting, he then founded Ridgewood Products, a venture that allowed him to combine his talents in furniture-making, woodworking, and supplying elevator parts.

Sonny was known not only for his professional endeavors but also for his rich personal life. He had a deep passion for woodworking and enjoyed spending time with horses and tractors. A devoted sports enthusiast, he cherished playing and watching baseball, with a particular fondness for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Middleton and former deacon at Middleton First Baptist Church.

Services will be held at Shackelford Funeral Directors chapel on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 1 p.m. in Middleton with the burial in the Middleton City Cemetery.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Geraldine Smith of Middleton whom he married in May of 1967; his daughter, Karen Lanier of Middleton; and his son, Tim Smith and Beth Smith of Middleton. Sonny was also a proud grandfather to Jamie Smith and Tana, Kaitlyn Smith, Kelsey Lanier, and Hunter Stroud, Kayleigh Lanier and Lane Lanier, and MaKinley Reed Foxx. His legacy continues with his great-grandchildren, Weslynn, Beckett and Sutton Smith, Waylon Stroud, and Reed Foxx. He shared a close bond with his brothers, Jerry Smith and Glenda of Ramer, and Don and Barbara Smith of Pocahontas. Additionally, he is survived by his brother-in-law, John Dillingham and Karen, along with his sister-in-laws, Susan Fiveash and Harris, all of Walnut, Mississippi, and Joanie Smith of Pocahontas, Tennessee.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, James William Smith and Myrtle Paralee Holloway Smith; his sister and her husband, Bernice Isom and Leon Isom; and his brother, Robert Neal Smith. Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to the Gideons International.

James “Sonny” Smith will be remembered for his contributions in both his professional and personal life, leaving behind a legacy of love, determination, and craftsmanship that will continue to inspire those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
