Pleasant Run Fall Fling Brings Disc Golf Fun and Raises Funds
The second annual Pleasant Run Fall Fling was held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Pleasant Run Creek Park in Bolivar. The event was a fundraiser to help purchase new disc golf baskets that will enable the City of Bolivar Parks and Recreation Department to expand its current offering from a permanent 12-hole course to an 18-hole course. Thirteen participants came out for the event to compete in a sport they enjoy while supporting the fundraising effort.
There were three tournament divisions with the winners being chosen from the top two players with the best scores in games of 18-hole play. In the Blue Division, Steadman Yoder came in First Place with 21 under par and Caleb Troyer came in Second Place with 18 under par. In the Green Division, Jimmy Garrett came in First Place with two under par and Dave Wade came in Second Place with one over par. In the Purple division, Morris Yoder came in First Place with 11 under par and Sam Cymbaluk came in Second Place with 16 over par. First Place winners received $30 and the Second Place winners received one free entry to the 2025 Pleasant Run Fall Fling tournament.
“The goal is to have a permanent 18-hole course. This tends to bring more people regionally to play as well as larger tournaments,” said Fall Fling coordinator Brittney Willis. “The local players of Hardeman County are passionate about making this happen and have helped achieve acquiring three new baskets with the help of the City of Bolivar Parks and Recreation department from money raised during the 2023 Fall Fling tournament.”
The First United Presbyterian Church, pastored by Tim Bryant–a disc golf enthusiast, grilled up lunch to raise money for the church youth group. The 2024 Pleasant Run Fall Fling raised around $2,000 for the course expansion through local and regional businesses sponsoring individual holes and donations.
“The funds will go to the City of Bolivar earmarked toward purchasing new baskets to expand our current offering of permanent holes from 12 to hopefully 15 [and eventually 18]. Disc golf is a wonderful sport, usually played at municipal parks for no charge with minimal upfront equipment investment,” said Ms. Willis, who shared about free resources available for anyone interested in the sport. “The Bolivar-Hardeman County Library rents out discs to anyone with a library card just as you would a book. When you rent the discs, you get a Driver, Mid-Range Driver, and a Putter to try before purchasing your own. The sport is another way to recreate outdoors while adding a bit of a challenge. The local disc golfer group hopes to host a clinic in the next year for those wishing to learn more about the sport.”
