Obituary: Janis King
Services for Mrs. Janis King, 97, of Cloverport, will be held in the chapel of Shackelford Funeral Directors on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 1 p.m. in Bolivar with the burial in the Vernon Cemetery near Cloverport. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday. Mrs. King passed away on Thursday morning, December 5, 2024, at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
A life-long resident of Cloverport, she was the daughter of the late Hubert Lacy and Cercie Willougby Thornton. On December 18, 1948, she married James Wesley “Shug” King. Mr. King departed this life on August 31, 1996, following 48 years of marriage. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. King was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillian Fawcett, Katherine Howell, and Margie Clayton; and two brothers, Hubert and Earnest Thornton.
For over 30 years, Mrs. King worked in assembly with Harmon Automotive (formerly known as Jervis) in Bolivar and was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church where she particularly enjoyed her Sunday school class. In her leisure time, she loved to sew for many people – from her family to folks at Pine Meadows Healthcare in Bolivar.
She leaves two sons, Lynn King (Linda) of Ripley, Tennessee and Terry King (Annette) of Toone; one sister, Georgia Hillhouse of Jackson; six grandchildren, Jenny McManus (Adam), Amy and Angie King, Jared King (Chrissy), Lacy Jacobs (Daniel), and Carrie Joyner (Adam); and eight great-grandchildren, Danilyn, Hazely and Noah Jacobs, Allison King, Collin Rand, Kinsley, and Whitley and Sutton Joyner.
