Inmates Injured and One Fatality at Hardeman County Correctional Facility

On Saturday, December 7, 2024, starting at approximately 12:25 a.m. CST, a group of inmates at the Hardeman County Correctional Facility (HCCF), located in Whiteville, Tennessee, were involved in separate, but likely related, physical altercations. These incidents involved multiple inmates.

Facility staff immediately intervened to address these altercations and render medical assistance to those who sustained injuries. Local EMS was also responsive during these incidents.

Facility medical personnel evaluated all of the individuals involved and provided various levels of first aid and emergency lifesaving efforts until EMS could arrive. A total of six individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for further evaluation and treatment of their injuries.

One inmate succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at approximately 3:49 a.m. CST by an attending physician at the hospital. Two of the inmates remain hospitalized. The other three inmates have returned to the facility. There were no injuries to any facility staff members.

Our partners at the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) were immediately notified of these incidents. TDOC’s Office of Investigations and Conduct (OIC) is handling this investigation, which remains ongoing, with the full support of our facility staff and leadership team.
