Bolivar-Hardeman County Branch NAACP Make Annual Visit to State Capitol

By Monroe Woods

Annually, the Tennessee State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (The NAACP) goes to Nashville, Tennessee and meets with the governor and local legislators in support of and in opposition to certain legislation being deliberated during their general session.

Tuesday, February 11, 2025, was the organizations 24th annual trip to the capitol for this purpose.

Led by recently reelected Branch President Mrs. Dixie H. Spencer, the Bolivar Hardeman County branch delegation went to Nashville where they were greeted and welcomed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, state legislators, and an array of partners and supporters.

“The Bolivar Hardeman County delegation, which included Youth Council Advisor Wanda Robinson, Branch Secretary Clara Wallace, and Executive Committee Members Johnnie Nelson, Willie Spencer, and Monroe Woods, were very pleased with the receptions and meetings with Representative Ron Gant, Johnny Shaw, and State Senator Page Walley. Discussion included the implementation of the recently passed Voucher legislation, and a list of bills currently under consideration,” said President Dixie Spencer. “We especially asked support of HB 218/SB27 to enact Universal PreK Funding Act.”

President Spencer emphasized that this discussion “does not end our concerns for and against legislation under consideration, we will be following up with our law makers until the session ends.”
