Obituary: Leonard C. Herron – Bolivar, Tennessee

Leonard C. Herron passed from this life on Wednesday morning, August 24, 2022, at his home in Bolivar.

He was born in Courtland, Mississippi, the son of the late Leonard C. Herron, Sr. and Nona D. Shook Herron. Following high school, he attended Ole Miss for two years. Mr. Herron served his country during World War II on active duty in the Panama Canal Zone and, during those years, fulfilled his desire to learn to fly by taking flying lessons. After his service in the military, he returned to Courtland working for a local contractor helping to build his sister’s house.

Mr. Herron married the former Evelyn Grace Zimmerman on April 18, 1957. They had been married for 32 years at the time of her death on October 28, 1989.

He moved to Houston, Texas where he became a draftsman and then a pipeline surveyor for Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. Later, he became a pipeline foreman in Middleton and continued that job in New York, Connecticut, and the Mid-West until his retirement. He traveled or worked in 48 states during his adult life.

Mr. Herron was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Bolivar. He loved his Lord and was faithful to work for His church. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and working with several charities.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2022, at Bolivar Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Alison Hazelwood (David) of Bolivar, Regina Watkins (Neville) of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Lesley Allen (Chris) of Memphis; one son, Luke Herron of McEwen, Tennessee; and three grandchildren, Hilary Hazelwood Dowdy (Dustin) of Bolivar, Mary Hazelwood Arkey (Josh) of Jonestown, Pennsylvania, and Maggie Watkins of Clarksville, Tennessee.

Also surviving are special family friends, Susan Burkeen, Elaina Wall, Kay Hampton, and Harold Reynolds. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lib Vinson and Sissy Smith.
