Retired Teaches See Advancements in S.T.E.M. Education at Learning Center

Members of the Hardeman County Retired Teachers Association had the opportunity to tour the Hardeman County Learning Center on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. K-8 S.T.E.M. Coordinator Deana Sain showed the progress the Hardeman County Schools has made in S.T.E.M (science, technology, engineering, and math) education since many of them retired.
Ms. Sain discussed her goals for promoting S.T.E.M. education in the county schools, so those students can remain academically competitive with their peers in Hardeman County as well as outside of the district. She shared how partnering with district teachers has made it possible to create interdisciplinary projects addressing multiple instructional standards.
The Learning Center recently received a TVA grant, which enabled Ms. Sain to purchase additional teaching tools and expand program offerings. Students in fourth through eighth grade were on hand to demonstrate how they use the resources in the Learning Center. Some of the demonstrations included a pickle autopsy and work on ideas for a better football helmet.
Although programming in the Learning Center primarily focuses on education for kindergarten through eighth grade students, Ms. Sain does also work with high school students on projects like shelving and signage for the center. She also invites professionals from across the community as guest speakers to help students see the connection between the S.T.E.M. subjects they study and how they can translate to future careers.
