Bolivar Elementary School Raises Funds with Annual Pancake Day

The annual Bolivar Elementary School (BES) Pancake Day flowed as smoothly as syrup on Saturday, April 5, 2025. It was an “all-hands on deck” fundraising event. Each year Pancake Day has volunteers who are elected officials, teachers, staff, and community members helping to raise funds for BES to benefit its students.

“The funds are used for the entire population of the school, for the general fund of the school. We utilize the funds for materials and supplies for students and teachers,” said Bethany Miller, BES Assistance Principal.

It was a “Who’s Who” pouring batter, flipping pancakes, and serving people picking up orders and those dining in at the school that morning. Not only do the people who purchase pancake plates save the date for the highly anticipated event, but the volunteers also. Several volunteers have served for several years on Pancake Day.

“The cooks are volunteers, and the servers are volunteers. Teachers, staff, and community members volunteer their time to be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Ms. Miller. “So many people come together to help make this day a success. This is a collaborative effort, and over the years, things have been adapted to make the day better.”

Students also participated in the fundraising experience by selling tickets. There was spirited competition among the BES classrooms and individual students for selling the most tickets. The students also learned marketing and money management skills through the process.

“They used people skills learned in guidance class and money management skills learned in math class,” said Ms. Miller. “Our students can get involved and show school spirit by selling tickets. We announce the classrooms that sell the most tickets, and we have a contest for the individual who sells the most tickets. That is why it is so important for our students to get out and sell tickets, because the money is for them, for the school. The school has a responsibility to our students and to our community.”
