A native of Hickory Valley, he was one of nine children born to Leonard Newsom and Clara Adell Burnett Pierce. He moved to Memphis in the late 1950s and lived the last five years in Savannah.
He is survived by a daughter, Tracey Montoya of Bartlett, Tennessee; two sons, Ronald Edward Pierce of Savannah and Gregory Lynn Pierce of Houston, Texas; his granddaughter, Kayla Renee Montoya of Bartlett; a sister, Betty Wynn (Lester) of Grand Junction; and two brothers, Larry Pierce (Cissy) of Saulsbury and Richard Pierce (Alma) of La Grange, Tennessee.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 48 years, Mareette Pierce, on December 11, 2018; and five brothers and sisters, Johnny, Mary Evelyn, Joe, Marie, and Annette.
A master carpenter, Mr. Pierce was a man of varied interests. He enjoyed fishing, target shooting, camping, coin collecting, golf, baking, and listening to music. Mr. Pierce was a former member of the Memphis Gun Club and was quite the “shade tree” mechanic. His family described him as funny, personable, and the type of person who never met a stranger. They will lovingly remember the way he always made sure his family was taken care of no matter the need.
Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
