Obituary: Robert Charles “Charlie” Armstrong

Robert Charles “Charlie” Armstrong ~ November 4, 1943 – June 3, 2025 (age 81)

Robert Charles “Charlie” Armstrong, a cherished son, devoted father, beloved brother, adoring grandfather, and great grandfather, gracefully left this world on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, in Silerton, Tennessee, at the age of 81. Born on November 4, 1943, in Memphis, Tennessee, Charlie’s life’s journey was defined by his unwavering commitment to family, a passion for music, and an industrious spirit that saw him thrive in his professional pursuits.

A proud graduate of South Side High School in Memphis, Charlie channeled his talents into a fruitful career. He diligently worked at Harman Automotive as a supervisor in the paint line, showcasing a remarkable work ethic that would later extend to when he worked for Armstrong Transportation. Amidst the demands of the workplace, Charlie remained steadfastly grounded, finding joy and solace within the warm embrace of his home.

Charlie’s interests were as rich as the life he led. He found great delight in the rhythms of music, often expressing himself through karaoke, where his soulful renditions could brighten any room. The thrill of NASCAR races captivated him, while TV mystery shows brought a touch of intrigue to his evenings. Yet, above all else, it was his unwavering love for his family that triumphed in every aspect of his life.

Chapel services were held at Shackelford Funeral Directors on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 2 p.m. in Bolivar with the burial in Piney Grove Cemetery.

His legacy continues through his devoted daughter, Traci Mayfield and her husband, Robert of Silerton, as well as his dear sister, Sandy Meador of Oakland. Charlie’s spirit lives on in his grandchildren, Jacob Mayfield and Hayley, John Mayfield and Nicole, Robyn Peebles and Ben, Alex Armstrong and Crystal, Colby Armstrong and Lexi, Aaron Armstrong and Angelina, Parker Armstrong, and Keegan Armstrong-Lovejoy and Christopher and Nicholas Armstrong. He leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren who will carry forth his love and lessons through generations.

While we celebrate the laughter, joy, and management he brought into our lives, we also mourn those who have gone before him. Charlie is reunited in eternal peace with his beloved sons, Tony and Tommy Armstrong; his beloved wife, Carolyn Armstrong who died in 2005; his parents, Robert “Buster” and Louise Armstrong; his granddaughter, Leah Mayfield; and his brothers, Carl and Don Armstrong; along with his sister, Anita Henson.

Charlie’s faith as a Baptist informed his path and provided comfort throughout his life. His rise from a Memphis native to a respected figure in the Hardeman County community, where he resided since 1979, speaks to his enduring spirit and connection to those around him.

As we bid farewell to a man whose love knew no bounds, we hold dear the memories woven into the fabric of our lives, forever cherishing the presence of Robert Charles “Charlie” Armstrong. His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication remains etched in our hearts.  Memorial contributions in his name name be sent to the American Cancer Society.
