WES Basketball Skill Camp Teaches Fundamentals and Discipline

Whiteville Elementary School opened its two-week Basketball Skill Camp on Monday, June 9, 2025, for its students. The first week was geared towards students in kindergarten through fourth grade and the second week for students in fifth through eighth grades.
This was the second year the Basketball Skill Camp has been held under the direction of James Shaw, who has extensive experience in playing and coaching basketball. Partnering with WES Principal Casshawndra Sain, who played high school and collegiate basketball, the two worked to ensure the students benefited beyond learning basketball skills.

“The first skills we taught are respect, hard work, effort, and discipline. The basketball skills we taught are fundamentals like proper shooting form, passing, dribbling, ball handling, and pivoting,” said Mr. Shaw.
Eager students came ready for camp. Some had previously played basketball and for many, it was the first time they had played on a basketball court.

“For me, I saw frightened, unsure and unskilled players get better in the fundamentals of basketball in six days. We talked about expectations and rewards, and they quickly accepted the challenge,” said Mr. Shaw.
Mr. Shaw was impressed by the students who attended the camp.

“We were encouraged that no one quit! Many young people learn to give up easily and have no commitment to what they start,” said Mr. Shaw. “I applaud their parents for supporting us in making sure students stayed committed. I am always encouraged by Mayor Bowden and the men and women who make up the city’s aldermen. I am hoping the city and county will see the need to build an indoor recreational facility for the citizens of Whiteville.”
