Whiteville Police to Retire K-9 Kai Due to Terminal Health Condition

On Friday, July 11, 2025, the Whiteville Police Department shared in an emotional Facebook post the retirement of K-9 Officer Kai after a diagnosis of Histiocytic Sarcoma, which is a very progressive form of cancer. The diagnosis came as a surprise since Officer Kai received a “good bill of health” after a full checkup earlier this year.

According to the post, Officer Kai received another full check up in July at Old Hatchie Veterinary Clinic in Bolivar where concern was expressed after x-rays revealed several masses. On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Officer Kai was sent to Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine for a second opinion. From that appointment, it was confirmed the cancer was in his lymph nodes and both lungs, and are pressing against his heart.

K-9 Kai has served the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department and Whiteville Police Department (WPD) for the past five years. Officer Jonathan Luttrell, who is K-9 Kai’s handler, and Officer Kai joined the WPD full-time in July 2024. Since that time, both officers have been assets to the department.

According to the post, Officer Luttrell discussed treatment options with the doctors. It was determined the survival rate was very low, even with surgery and chemotherapy, and both could affect K-9 Kai’s quality of life. As a result, Officer Kai will be medically retired and recognized for his work and dedication to the community of Hardeman County. The WPD will share more about the retirement ceremony, so the community may attend.
