Obituary: Roger Eugene Helmuth
Roger Eugene Helmuth, 84, of Berlin, Ohio, passed away peacefully at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2025, with his loving wife by his side.
Roger was born on June 10, 1941, in Kalona, Iowa to the late Edgar and Bertha (Nissley) Helmuth. On October 25, 1962, he married Ruth Yoder who preceded him in death on July 13, 2014. On October 16, 2015, he married Freda (Schlabach) Yoder and she survives.
Roger spent his early married years working as a farmer, an EMT, and later as a general contractor. He never met a stranger—his warm personality and gift for storytelling made him a friend to all who crossed his path.
In addition to his first wife, Ruth, and his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Edna Mae Helmuth and Barbara Ellen Hershberger; grandson, Alex Helmuth; and brothers-in-law, Jake Hershberger, LJ Helmuth, Durlin Miller, and Jim Yoder.
Roger is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Freda (Yoder) Helmuth. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Roger Glenn (Cynthia) Helmuth of Tryon, North Carolina, Allen (Melody) Helmuth of Athens, Tennessee, Rosetta (Wade) Stoll Wheatland, Wyoming, Vernon (Jean) Helmuth of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Arlyn Helmuth Cross Hill, South Carolina; and by his stepchildren, Cheryl (Daryl) Bange of Barnwell, South Carolina, Norita (Marcus) Yoder of Berlin, Curtis (Rhonda) Yoder Killbuck, Norvan (Jewel) Yoder of South Boston, Virginia, and Conrad (Emily) Yoder of Hartville.
He also leaves behind 25 grandchildren, 20 step-grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 10 step great-grandchildren; all of whom brought him much joy.
Also survived by siblings, Verna (Ray) Overholt, South Carolina, Frederick (Anna) Helmuth, Ohio, Jacob (Laura) Helmuth. Florida, Rosemary Helmuth Tennessee, Simon (Lillian) Helmuth, Indiana, Sanford (Sheila) Helmuth, Virginia, James (Brenda) Helmuth, Virginia, Loraine (Darrell) Deiner, Illinois, Salinda (Cletus) Rhodes, Virginia, Grace Miller, Ohio, Anne Yoder, Missouri, Tim (Romilia) Helmuth, Virginia, Mark (Retha) Helmuth, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held at Gospel Haven Mennonite Church, 6871 SR 241, Millersburg, on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Jr. Kline officiating. Friends may call at Gospel Haven Mennonite Church from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. A graveside service will be held at the Whiteville Mennonite Church Cemetery, 7065 Fayette Corner Drive, Whiteville, Tennessee 38075 on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11 a.m. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the burial.
Roger will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
