Camille Shavon Reaches 35-Year Business Milestone Remaining Steadfast and Consistent

It was a spectacular evening on Saturday, August 9, 2025, full of glamour and always purpose as Camille Shavon of Hair Expressions celebrated with family, friends, and the community for reaching a 35-year milestone in business. From the outside, it may appear success has come easily to Ms. Shavon, but the journey is one which has been filled with hard work, some tears, and a lot of prayer.

Ms. Shavon moved to Tennessee in 1986 from Chicago, Illinois ready to start a career in television and film, but was in for a rude surprise when she arrived. Jobs in that industry were scarce, so Camille resorted to what she knew best and that was hair styling; a skill she believes is a God-given gift. That gift became how Camille later supported her family and one, which she used to build her client base that to this day continues to grow. It has also turned into a means for educating young people to learn the skills they need to take ahold of their futures and become entrepreneurs.

“I know it’s been 35 years, but it’s like . . . Wow! Has it really been 35 yrs? I’ve traveled both nationally and internationally hair styling and instructing . . . meeting and styling celebrities, while creating both radio segments and newspaper hair columns,” said Ms. Shavon. “Having two locations. Founding my brand of educational courses, and passing my legacy on to my daughter and granddaughter. It doesn’t get much better than that!”

During those 35 years, Ms. Shavon has experienced numerous professional successes. She is proud of being recognized in 2010 as a winner of The Jewel Award for 20 years of being in business; in 2012 as a recipient of the Sterling Award, 20 Most Influential Women in West Tennessee; and in 2024 as a recipient of a Key to the City of Bolivar from Mayor Julian McTizic. She sees God’s promises throughout her successes as well as the challenges.

Ms. Shavon has also experienced a personal tragedy, one which occurred in 2015.

“Not even after my worst tragedy, which was the loss of my daughter, did I ever consider giving up,” said Ms. Shavon. “Her daughter, Prahmys, was only 14 months old at the time. Raising and protecting Prahmys has given me the strength to carry on!”

The work Ms. Shavon has done since starting her business has Touched the lives of so many people. During the evening, several people shared how Ms. Shavon had made an impact in their lives. It was heartwarming to Ms. Shavon learning she touched the lives of many beyond them sitting in her styling chair.

“Bolivar City Councilwoman Caroline Miller shared a testimony of how I helped her through a hard time in her life years ago. She began to weep. That touched me deeply because she had never shared that with me. I never knew how impactful I had been in her life. Several of my students were present and gave testimonies on the impact I’ve had on their lives,” said Ms. Shavon. “It was indeed a blessing to have the support of clients and friends, but what touched my heart the most was having over 30 family members travel from several states to show love, honor, and their support. I didn’t keep a dry eye.”

A very special moment during the evening for Ms. Shavon was honoring her mother and presenting her with flowers.

Being a business professional and successful for 35 years is not easy and does not just happen. Over the years, Ms. Shavon has learned a lot as a business professional. Although she had the styling skills, learning how to run and manage a business and were skills she acquired along the way.

“I think most businesses struggle with understanding financial planning and financial literacy. It’s definitely a component I had to learn along the way,” said Ms. Shavon, who is committed to equipping the young people she teaches with that knowledge as she mentors them, and they move into the profession. “I’ve assisted with over 400 in the State of Tennessee to receive their braiders license. Many have opened businesses of their own. I have created spaces in both of my locations for them to work and be mentored. That indeed is my Legacy, giving back!”

Through the creation of Hair Talk with Camille Shavon Educational courses, she offers a variety of programs that help develop youth into future entrepreneurs. When asked if she has more projects in the works, Ms. Shavon replied with an obvious answer.

“Indeed, I do! I always keep something under my sleeve. Stay tuned,” said Ms. Shavon, who also shared some words of inspiration for anyone wanting to become an entrepreneur. “Remain steadfast and consistent! Giving up is not an option!”
