Obituary: Betty Sparkman

Betty Sparkman ~ January 23, 1929 – November 17, 2025 (age 96)

Betty Sparkman, a beloved matriarch and retired schoolteacher, passed away peacefully her home in Ramer, Tennessee, on Monday, November 17, 2025. Born on January 23, 1929, in the charming town of Knoxville, Tennessee, Betty’s life was a tapestry of memories woven from her passionate dedication to education, family, and the simple joys that colored her days.

Betty spent many rewarding years imparting knowledge and inspiration to young minds at Pocahontas and Middleton Elementary Schools, where her nurturing spirit and encouraging demeanor left an indelible mark on countless students. Beyond her role as an educator, she was a cherished member of Saulsbury Baptist Church, fostering a sense of community and support among her fellow congregants.

Family was the heartbeat of Betty’s existence. She found joy in the laughter of her loved ones and delighted in the art of cross stitching, the beauty of flowers, and the adventures held within the pages of her favorite books. Betty maintained a deep connection to her roots, living most of her married life in Hardeman County after moving to Memphis from her hometown of Knoxville. It was here that she cultivated a life rich with the love of her family, especially cherishing moments spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Lynda Dian Putman and her husband Glen of Jonesboro, Arkansas, who carry on her legacy of kindness and compassion. Her grandchildren, Rhyne Putman and Micah, Christin Sparkman, Morgan Fitz Gibbons and her husband Nick, and Sidney Sparkman Garcia, will forever hold close the memories of their grandmother’s tender love and unwavering support. The joy she found in her great-grandchildren—Remy, Ryan (Callie), Maggie, Ian, Ben, and Annie—was evident in every smile and every hug shared.

She rejoins those who have gone before her, which include her beloved husband, James Henry Sparkman; son, James Karl Sparkman; father, James Henry Rhyne; and mother, Lena Paye Rhyne. They now embrace her in eternal peace.

A visitation for family and friends will be held at Shackelford Funeral Directors on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Middleton, Tennessee. This will be followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., honoring the remarkable life of Betty Sparkman. She will be laid to rest at the Saulsbury Cemetery in Saulsbury.

Betty Sparkman’s legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her compassion, dedication, and indomitable spirit will undoubtedly inspire generations to come, reminding us always of the beauty found in love, family, and the endless pursuit of knowledge. Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
