Shelby Jackson Earns Prestigious Southern Council of Optometrists Endowed Scholarship

Bolivar resident Shelby Jackson was recently honored with the Southern Council of Optometrists Endowed Scholarship award. It is quite an accomplishment for Ms. Jackson, who is a first-year student at Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis.

Shelby graduated high school from HomeLife Academy in 2021. While in high school, Shelby worked at the Hardeman County Vision Center in Bolivar. It was during that time working with Dr. George Walters, Jr. and Dr. Elizabeth G. Ligon that her interest in optometry was sparked. Shelby continued her education at Murray State University (MSU) in Kentucky and graduated in December 2024 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry, with a focus in pre-optometry. As a student at SCO, she is continuing her studies working towards becoming a Doctor of Optometry.

Each year, Southern College of Optometry recognizes its most outstanding first-year students with scholarships through the generosity of alumni, ophthalmic partners. and friends. The award recognizes an optometry student who resides in a Southern Council member state with a competitive undergraduate GPA, OAT scores, admissions interview, and extracurricular activities. It comes with an annual scholarship of $3,000 over the course of the four-year doctorate program. ~ Southern College of Optometry
