Obituary: Barbara Carter

Barbara Carter, a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and respected retired administrative assistant with the Federal government, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Born on June 19, 1941, in Kirbyville, Texas, Barbara lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for her family and community.

Barbara’s early years were shaped by her upbringing in Kirbyville, the daughter of William Earl Calhoun and Agnes Rudy Mae Martin Calhoun. She was known for her commitment to service, having honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corps, a testament to her strength and patriotism. Following her military service, she embarked on a career as an administrative assistant with the Federal government, where she worked diligently until her retirement.

In her personal life, Barbara was a woman of varied interests and talents. She found joy in sewing, a craft she pursued with passion and skill, and also enjoyed collecting coins and stamps, hobbies that reflected her appreciation for detail and history. She resided in Salem, Oregon, for many years before relocating to Hardeman County, Tennessee, where she lived for the last two years of her life.

Barbara is survived by her son, Leon Carter (Georgia) of Middleton, who stands beside her memory with pride and love. She is also remembered fondly by her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each carrying forward her legacy of kindness and family devotion.

Her passing is deeply felt by those who knew her, including the family and friends who remain with us. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy Eugene Carter, her parents, William Earl Calhoun and Agnes Rudy Mae Martin Calhoun, and her sister, Winnie Calhoun. Their memories and the impact they collectively had on Barbara’s life are cherished and honored.

A visitation will be held to honor Barbara’s life on April 24, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Middleton. Friends and family are invited to gather to pay their respects and celebrate a life well-lived.  Burial will take place in Portland, Oregon.

Barbara Carter’s life story is one of steadfast  commitment—to her country, her career, her hobbies, and above all, to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, dedicated service, and enduring love, which will continue to inspire those who were privileged to know her.
