Gardeners, home cooks, and tomato enthusiasts are invited to participate in the 2026 Hardeman County Tomato Contest on Tuesday, July 7, at the Bolivar Farmers Market.

Hosted by UT-TSU Extension Hardeman County, the contest is free to enter and open to both youth and adult participants. Entries will be accepted beginning at 9:00 a.m., with judging starting at 10:00 a.m.

Participants may enter tomatoes in a variety of categories, including Largest Tomato, Weirdest Shape, 3 Best Red Tomatoes, 3 Best Green Tomatoes, and 10 Best Cherry Tomatoes. In addition, contestants may showcase their culinary talents by entering the Best Cold Tomato Dish and Best Cooked Tomato Dish categories.

All tomatoes entered in the tomato categories must be grown by the participant. However, tomatoes used in the dish categories do not have to be grown by the participant. Ribbon awards will be presented in each category.

“The tomato contest is a fun way to celebrate the gardening season and recognize the hard work of local gardeners,” said Rachel Howell, TSU Horticulture Extension Agent III for Hardeman County. “Whether you grow giant tomatoes, unique-shaped tomatoes, or enjoy preparing tomato recipes, we encourage everyone to participate.”

The contest provides an opportunity for community members of all ages to share their gardening successes, learn from fellow gardeners, and enjoy friendly competition.
