28 Years Later: Justice Delayed Is Not Justice Denied

Today marks 28 years since the tragic murder of Michael Bell, who was senselessly taken while working at McKee’s Stateline Convenience Store on July 23, 1998.
While nearly three decades have passed, I want Michael’s family and the citizens to know one thing: Michael Bell’s name has never been forgotten at the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office. This case remains an active and ongoing investigation. Throughout the years, our investigators have continued to pursue every credible lead.
The investigation has determined that Michael was not the victim of a robbery, but rather the target of a coordinated and deliberate murder. Investigators believe the suspect fled the scene in a 1990s General Motors sedan, traveling south on Highway 125 toward Walnut, Mississippi.
In 2018, the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office submitted evidence from the case to the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, where photographs were digitally enhanced, generating additional investigative leads. Those efforts, along with continued collaboration between local, state, and federal law enforcement, have kept this investigation moving forward.
In 2019, the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the FBI to offer a $24,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Michael’s murder. That commitment has never wavered.
Justice has no expiration date. We remain dedicated to identifying those responsible and bringing long-overdue answers and accountability for Michael’s family.

We remain committed to following every lead, pursuing every opportunity, and doing everything within our power to bring those responsible to justice, ” said Sheriff Doolen.
“I ask our community to stand with us once again. Time has passed, circumstances have changed, and now is the time to do the right thing. If you know something, no matter how small it may seem, please come forward. Together, we can bring long-overdue answers, accountability, and hopefully a measure of peace to Michael’s family. We will never stop seeking justice for Michael.”
