Obituary: Emily Letitia Vincent Mills
Emily Letitia Vincent Mills, 89, of Middleton, TN entered the gates of Heaven and into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Friday, August 28, 2026, joining her beloved husband, Marvin, just a week after his heavenly arrival. Emily was born at home in Hardeman County, TN on October 19, 1936, to Aubrey Thomas Vincent and Alma Pirtle Vincent. Emily is preceded by her husband of 71 years, Marvin Mills and survived by her three children, Larry Marvin Mills (Debbie), Kelvin Scott Mills (Catherine) and Letitia Carol Young (Scott).
She also leaves behind five precious grandchildren, Keith Allen Mills (Aundrea), Erica Leigh Mills Eschbach (Andy), Aubrey Raymond Mills (Chelsea), Sarah Catherine Mills Muller (Zachary) and Austin Scott Mills (Kayelyn) and eight great grandchildren plus one on the way.
Emily and Marvin graduated together from Middleton High School in 1954 where they were both voted “Most Attractive” and soon moved to Memphis where they both worked at Sears Crosstown. After her work was shifted to staying home to raise her three children for several years, Emily worked at the bookstore at Memphis State University and later for Central Hardware near her Memphis home.
She and her husband were charter members of Parkway Village Baptist Church for over 30 years and later moved back to her homeplace in Hardeman County, where they were members of First Baptist Church of Bolivar, TN. They traveled extensively around the country with church groups in both churches and often on their own. Emily was also a member of the Woman’s Missionary Union at First Baptist Church in Bolivar as well as the Hatchie chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Emily truly loved her family and kept to her roots of farm life, sewing and cooking, making her house a loving home. She enjoyed sharing stories and skills with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Everyone who visited was well-fed if not stuffed and sent home with goodies, including her delicious desserts and homemade jams and jellies. She was proud of her many titles: Mama, Grandma, Grandmama and G.G., but her most important title was “child of God”.
Emily was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey and Alma, her brothers Emmett Thomas Vincent and Wayne Tate Vincent and sisters Alma Jen-O Vincent Newman and Annie Opal Vincent Young. Visitation will be Thursday, September 10 at Shackelford Funeral Home in Middleton, TN at 11:00 with a service following at 12:00 (noon). Burial will follow at Reaves Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to First Baptist Church of Bolivar, TN.
