Man Charged With First-Degree Murder Following Shooting in Toone

A man has been charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting Monday afternoon, according to the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

According to the arrest warrant, deputies and investigators responded to Simmons Loop at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026, following a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found Jatarious Fuller on the front porch of the residence. HCSO reported that Fuller told investigators he had shot the victim in self-defense. Authorities said Fuller had also made the self-defense claim while speaking with 911 dispatchers.

The victim was found slumped over in the front seat of a vehicle with two visible gunshot wounds, one to the chest and another to his left arm, according to HCSO.

Fuller reportedly told investigators that the victim had pulled into the driveway, exited his vehicle and began banging on the front door of the residence. Fuller said he looked through a window, saw the victim and yelled for him to leave or he would shoot him.

According to the arrest warrant, Fuller told investigators that he then retrieved a firearm, went outside and saw the victim inside the victim’s vehicle. Fuller allegedly went into the driveway and shot the victim.

Fuller further told investigators that after the shooting, he reached into the vehicle to place it in park and turn it off before taking the handgun back inside the residence, wrapping it up and placing it on his bed.

Investigators determined that Fuller had retrieved the handgun from inside the residence and that the victim was attempting to leave the driveway when the shooting occurred.

Fuller is being charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The charges are allegations, and Fuller is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
