Hardeman County Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 50 Years of Supporting Local Businesses

The Hardeman County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating 50 years of supporting local businesses, encouraging economic development and bringing the community together. As the organization marks its golden anniversary, Chamber Director Vickie Walton is reflecting on its history, the people who have contributed to its success and the opportunities that lie ahead.

“Fifty years is a huge milestone for the Hardeman County Chamber of Commerce. It represents generations of businesses, community leaders, volunteers and members who believed in this county and wanted to see it thrive,” Walton said.

The Chamber’s roots trace back to the Bolivar Area Chamber of Commerce, which initially focused on industrial development, particularly the hardwood industry and the Tennessee Forest Festival. As businesses and industries expanded throughout the area, the organization transitioned into the Hardeman County Chamber of Commerce in 1976 to better represent economic development across the entire county.

Over the past five decades, the Chamber has continued to evolve alongside the community while maintaining its original commitment to supporting local businesses and encouraging growth.

“I believe it comes down to people who care. Hardeman County has always had people who are willing to show up, share ideas and work together to make things happen,” Walton said.

“Businesses and communities change over time, and the Chamber has to change with them. But the heart of our work has remained the same: connecting people, supporting businesses and promoting the place we call home.”

Today, the Chamber serves as a resource, advocate and networking organization for businesses throughout Hardeman County. Its efforts include promoting local businesses, connecting members with opportunities and encouraging residents to shop locally.

“Our job is to be a resource, a connector and an advocate for our business community. We want to help businesses get the word out about what they do, connect them with opportunities and remind people why shopping and supporting local matters,” Walton explained.

While the Chamber celebrates its accomplishments, Walton recognizes the challenges facing today’s business owners, including rising operating costs, workforce shortages and the difficulty of reaching customers in an ever-changing marketplace.

She believes the connections and resources provided through Chamber membership can help businesses navigate those challenges.

“Small business owners are often wearing several hats at once,” Walton said. “That’s one reason having a strong network matters. The Chamber can help connect businesses with one another, share resources and give them more visibility in the community.”

To commemorate the anniversary, the Chamber will host an open house on Wednesday, October 28, welcoming members, community leaders and friends of the organization.

The celebration also includes a look back at the Chamber’s history through photographs and memories collected over the years. Walton said the organization has been sharing historical photographs and asking community members to help identify individuals and businesses pictured.

“We’ve also been going through buckets of photos and sharing throwbacks from throughout the years. We’re asking the community to help us identify the people and businesses in those pictures and share the memories that go along with them,” Walton said. “We want this celebration to be about the people who have been part of our story.”

Looking toward the next five to ten years, Walton hopes to strengthen the Chamber’s presence throughout Hardeman County, build relationships with new and existing businesses and encourage the next generation of entrepreneurs and community leaders.

“My goal is to continue building a Chamber that is active, visible and valuable to its members. I want businesses to know who we are, what we do and how we can support them,” she said.

For Walton, the anniversary is also an opportunity to recognize the individuals who established the organization and laid the foundation for its continued work.

“I would tell them thank you. The work they started 50 years ago is still bringing people together today,” she said. “They may not have known every way Hardeman County would grow and change, but they understood the importance of businesses and community members working together. We’re proud to carry that vision forward.”

As the Chamber celebrates its first half- century, Walton hopes future generations will reflect on an organization that remained committed to supporting local businesses, strengthening community connections and building a brighter future for Hardeman County.

“I hope they’ll say the Chamber continued to show up for Hardeman County. I hope they’ll look back and see an organization that supported its businesses, brought people together and believed in the future of this community,” Walton said.

“And I hope they’ll still be pulling out old photos, sharing stories and celebrating the people who helped make it all possible!”

As Walton reflected on the Chamber’s 50-year history, several longtime members came to mind who have supported the organization over the years. Among those she recalled were Shackleford Funeral Home, the Bolivar Bulletin, Bolivar Insurance and Real Estate, Quinco, Howell Insurance, McKinnie Insurance (Whites), Bill’s Flowers, Old Hatchie Veterinary Clinic, Merle Norman, and A Haven of Flowers. While not an exhaustive list, these businesses and organizations represent the longstanding relationships and community support that have contributed to the Chamber’s success throughout the years.
