Students Donate to Loaves and Fishes for the Holiday Season

Area students collected canned goods and other non-perishable items to donate to the Hardeman County Loaves and Fishes food bank, which will be used to stock the shelves for the holiday season.

Lisa Lanier, Middleton Elementary School (MES) counselor, and a group of eager and excited students gathered the 1,150 cans and other non-perishable items the school collected, and loaded them onto the trailer that would transport the donations to the Loaves and Fishes building in Bolivar.

The school tied the food drive into the activities of its Red Ribbon Week, which ran October 24 – 28, 2022. To promote the food drive, MES encouraged its students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade to bring donations, and there was a caveat; the winning class would earn 45 extra minutes of P.E. time. Although there was an incentive, it was evident from the students who assisted Ms. Lanier with loading the trailer that they were genuinely excited about giving to Loaves and Fishes.

“They love it and enjoy bringing donations just to give back to the community,” said Lanier who has worked at MES for 20 years, and as a counselor for the past two years. “We have donated since I started working here.”

MES students gave a total of 1,150 cans with the first grade class earning the extra recess time with 271 cans.

Students at Grand Junction Elementary School students also made a donation to Loaves and Fishes. The donations from both schools will go to fill food boxes that are distributed throughout the county to families in need.
