BCHS Class of 2014 Holds Destination Reunion

It has been 10 years since many of the students from the Bolivar Central High School (BCHS) Class of 2014 last hung out together. But that did not hinder them as they celebrated their 10-year high school reunion by catching up with old friends and sharing memories from when they were students at BCHS.

The three-day destination reunion was held in Nashville, Tennessee, June 28 – 30, 2024. About 30 people from the class that had almost 200 students did not miss the opportunity to reconnect with each other. One person even flew in from Texas to attend the reunion.

“This was the first one since we graduated 10 years ago in 2014,” said Barius Polk, who hosted the memorable event. “As the host, I was genuinely excited to see how many people came up to Nashville for it being a destination reunion. It had been years since we last gathered, and I looked forward to reconnecting with old friends and catching up on each other’s lives.”

As with any reunion, there was a lot of reminiscing, and many walks were taken down memory lane. Mr. Polk described the experience was like stepping back in time, but also realizing the years that have passed since they all graduated. It was exciting to learn about all of the personal accomplishments his peers had achieved.

“The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia and warmth as we reminisced about our high school days, sharing laughter over shared memories and stories. I had a great night because it felt like stepping back in time while also appreciating how much we’ve all grown and accomplished since graduation,” said Mr. Polk. “Seeing familiar faces and hearing about everyone’s journeys was inspiring and uplifting. It was wonderful to see how our friendships have endured and how we’ve all matured into the individuals we are today.”

Mr. Polk also noted other shared connections, one being the BCHS Class of 2014, was the first to graduate under Mr. Jeff Barnes who was the school principal at that time.

“One person who stands out in memory is our principal, Mr. Barnes. Since we were his first graduating class at Bolivar Central High School, it made it that much special. Mr. Barnes was a visionary leader who had a clear vision for our school’s future. He set high standards for academic excellence, student conduct, and school spirit, inspiring both students and staff to strive for greatness,” said Mr. Polk. “Beyond the classroom, Mr. Barnes was known for his encouragement and support of students’ extracurricular activities, whether it was sports, music, or clubs. He attended our games and performances, cheering us on and showing genuine interest in our personal growth both academically and socially. Overall, Mr. Barnes was not just a principal but a mentor, leader, and advocate for the entire school community. His contributions to our education and personal growth are remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him during our time at school.”

Along with remembering special people, others included class members who had passed away during their senior year and after graduation. Those were Edward Gray (7/5/2021), Christopher Herron (9/27/21), Corey Mason (2/23/19), Justin Navarro (10/9/16), Christopher Pugh II (4/27/19), Jamal Sain (6/1/13), and Justin West (11/13/13). Those classmates were recognized at the reunion with a memorial display and verbal tributes.

“They all were known for their kindness and compassion towards others, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer support to those in need. They had a great sense of humor and could lighten any situation with their jokes and laughter, making school days more enjoyable for everyone. Whether it was in academics, sports, arts, or other pursuits, they displayed talent and creativity that inspired their peers and left a lasting impression,” said Mr. Polk. “Their memory continues to live on in the hearts and minds of us [classmates], who cherish the moments shared and strive to uphold the values and qualities they embodied.”

Mr. Polk cherishes his days as a student at BCHS. He attributes much of who he is today to that experience, along with the friendships he made. While enjoying every moment of the weekend, it was one he did not want to see end. Throughout each day and into the evenings, it became more apparent to Mr. Polk how much the experience benefited all who attended.

“Overall, the need for a class reunion arises from a desire to reconnect, reminisce, celebrate achievements, and strengthen bonds that may have faded over time,” said Mr. Polk, who shared more highlights from the reunion and is already making plans for the 15-year reunion. “Reconnecting with old friends, sharing memories, celebrating achievements, networking and reconnecting, dancing, taking pictures, singing with each other, and just creating new memories.”

The BCHS Class of 2014 is one that will be remembered for so many reasons. Mr. Polk proudly shared some that came to mind.

“The 2014 high school class will be remembered for our incredible spirit of innovation and creativity. From organizing unforgettable school events to spearheading groundbreaking initiatives, our class was known for thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries of what was possible. The passion for change and willingness to challenge the status quo set us apart from other classes,” said Mr. Polk. “We will be remembered as a tight-knit group that exemplified the true meaning of teamwork and solidarity.”
