Bolivar Juniors and Seniors Attend Career Day to Plan Their Futures
Bolivar Central High School (BCHS) juniors and seniors converged into the school gym, not for a basketball game (although the season is coming up soon), but instead to learn about business, career and education options available to them after graduating from high school. BCHS counselor Catania Minter organizes the event each year to educate students on a variety of opportunities whether a student is college-bound, has an interest in the military, plans to head straight into the workforce or other direction.
“I am hoping for students to have exposure, for them to recognize there are so many opportunities after graduation. It is to make them career ready They may not know that some of these institutions, colleges, universities, careers exist and this gives them exposure. If they have questions, the representatives can assist them.” said Ms. Minter, who shared about a new vendor that was on site for Career Day. “Vocational Rehab helps any student with a disability or needing accommodations, to become career ready after graduation while preparing them in high school. They help them do the applications and know there is availability out there.”
There were 53 vendors onsite to give students insight into opportunities. Several students shared positive comments about the Career Day. Some already have plans after high school and were eager to see what else was out there for them.
BCHS juniors Jiven Watkins and Kalan Polk, who were able to speak with representatives from Austin-Peay, the University of Memphis, and Mississippi State University, believe Career Day is helpful to students.
“I feel like it is a very good opportunity. Lot of kids see options they have and places to go,” said Jiven Watkins.
This was the first time for BCHS junior Katie Lax to attend Career Day.
“I think it is a great opportunity for us juniors and the seniors as well that don’t know what they are going to do,” said Katie, who noted she is undecided. “I still have no idea what I want to do. It showed me I have more opportunities than I thought I did.”
Hardeman County School Board member Kenny Adkins was representing Centennial Bank at the Career Day. He agreed Career Day provides a good opportunity for the juniors and seniors at BCHS to learn about post-secondary opportunities.
“I think it is a great benefit because the students get exposed to so many different things. Some have a career path in mind already, and some do not,” said Mr. Atkins. “I am glad we have this opportunity where they can talk and ask questions. I am sitting by an Ole Mississippi representative and they are asking him questions about specific fields of study.”

Mr. Adkins had the chance to speak with several students and shared that many already knew their plans after high school.
High school seniors Lily Pulse and Kiersten Dees are two students who already know their plans.
“It is very fun and interesting knowing about all of the colleges and options we have,” said Lily, who plans to attend the University of Mississippi and is considering career fields in either finance or forensics.
“I am learning new things about colleges and what is available,” said Kiersten, who plans to attend UT-Knoxville and study veterinarian medicine.
Students are encouraged to reach out to their high school guidance counselor for more information about opportunities available to them for after high school.
