Bolivar Central Football Tigers Win First Playoff Game Since 2007
UPDATE 11/15/24: The BCHS Tigers had a great season, but was unable to bring home a win against the Covington High School Chargers during the second round of the playoffs on Friday, November 15, 2024. The final score was BCHS 06 and Covington 70.
The Bolivar Central High School (BCHS) Tigers football team came home winners after a 36-32 first round playoff against the Sheffield High School Mighty Knights on Friday, November 8, 2024. The last time BCHS made it to the playoffs was in 2017, and the last time the Tigers finished with a playoff win was in 2007.
“Last year, we had a winning season, but many counted us out when we lost 18 seniors and our head coach,” said BCHS Assistant Principal Shobek Dethrow, who shared about the changes the BCHS football program experienced last season.
In January 2024, then head BCHS football Coach Hayden Williams announced he was taking the head coach position at Humboldt High School. That presented a huge challenge of finding his replacement. The search for a new coach was determined, but thoughtful. Finding the right person for the BCHS head coach position led the school to Rennard Woodmore, who was named BCHS’ head football coach in March 2024.
“Under the leadership of [principal] Brittany Avent and Coach/Athletic Director Mark Fulghum, we as an admin team/search committee came together and hired Coach Woodmore,” said Mr. Dethrow. “The thing that stood out about Coach Woodmore for me is that it was evident from the very beginning he was a man of good character. He is huge on building relationships with our students. He believes in the old saying that states, ‘people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care’. Coach Woodmore shares those values. Since those student athletes know their coach cares for them, they show the same care for their coach by soaking up all the knowledge and wisdom he provides and leaving it all on the field when it’s game time.”
Mr. Dethrow also gave credit to Coach Woodmore’s staff, which includes assistant coaches Tony Bonds, David Clayton, Daniel Irvine, Tyler Joyner, and Robert Steward. He described them as amazing leaders of young men, who are making an impact on the players on the field, in the classroom, and in life.
It will be game time again on Friday, November 15, 2024, as the BCHS Tigers head out to play against the Covington High School Chargers for round two of the playoffs.
