Bolivar-Hardeman County Branch NAACP Heads to the “Hill”
The Bolivar-Hardeman County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) attended the 22nd Annual “Legislative Day on the Hill”, on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. The event is hosted each year by the Tennessee State Conference NAACP on the second Tuesday in February.
There were 11 members from the Hardeman County branch who joined other branches from across the State of Tennessee traveling to Nashville where the event was held at Capitol Hill.
The local branch met with Representative Johnny Shaw and Senator Page Walley and was able to share their concerns about current issues that included third grade retention and police oversight.
“Going to the Hill, we realize in Nashville there is a super majority of Republicans versus Democrats, but you cannot sit still and allow things to happen,” said Dixie Spencer, Bolivar-Hardeman County Branch NAACP President. “You must show up and let people know you also have a voice, and you want that voice to be heard. Also, that you are going to do whatever is necessary to try to make a change that will be better or the best for the people in the community.”
Spencer has been attending “Legislative Day on the Hill” for 10 years. She realizes they may not always be able to effect change, but they are going to be sure they always show up.
“We will continue to do that (show and voice our concerns), because you never know when we may have that positive effect,” said Spencer.
The Bolivar-Hardeman County Branch of the NAACP is an executive committee and an extension of the Tennessee NAACP National Board, which has board members. The local executive committee meets the third Thursday of every month, and the monthly membership meeting is on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings are held at St. Paul CME Church, 808 Pruitt Street, Bolivar 38008.
