Bolivar Mayor McTizic Partners with Hair Talk To Present “Youth Braider Explosion”

City of Bolivar Mayor Julian McTizic is partnering with Hair Talk With Camille Shavon Educational Courses to present the “Youth Braider Explosion” on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the Bolivar Municipal Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Youth Braider Explosion was developed under the umbrella of Hair Talk with Camille Shavon’s Educational Courses to serve as a means to teach the technique of hair braiding. The class prepares youth for a trade that will enable them to go out into the work force and increase household incomes. The technique of braiding sharpens motor skills such as hand/eye coordination, increases creativity by learning how to envision then execute, and lastly aids in the development of personal confidence which builds self-esteem.

Students will learn the technique of hair braiding on three different levels:

1) Beginners: Those who will learn how to execute and master a basic braid/plat.

2) Intermediate: Those who will excel from basic braiding and learn how to execute then master a Corn Row/French Braid. Adding hair extensions will also be introduced on this level.

3) Advanced: Those who have mastered the basic technique of hair braiding will learn more intricate hair extension techniques such as box braiding, feed in braiding, and Knotless braiding.

Understanding the importance of enhancing vocational skills, Mayor McTizic will provide tuition and mannequins for youth ages five to 17 who wish to take the course. Students do not have to be residents of Hardeman County or attend a Hardeman County school to attend the event.

The need for our youth to develop vocational skills is of utter importance. The vocational trade of Cosmetology is now a billion dollar industry. The Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology introduced a Braider Certification/License in July 2019. With the completion of 16 hours of training in Health and Hygiene, a student as young as 14 years of age can legally obtain a Tennessee state license.

In January 2023, Hair Expressions was approved for the State of Tennessee Apprenticeship program as the first salon to be able to have youth and adults work in that business.
