Bolivar Recognizes Community Members, Approves Rezoning, Sets Public Hearing for Annexation

The Bolivar City Council meet for its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, January 8, 2024. All council members were present. Some of the items covered included:

The Council approved the minutes of the Monday, December 11, 2023, regularly scheduled Council meeting. {read more about the December meeting here}

The Mayor’s Report included, City offices will be closed on Monday, January 15, 2024, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday and the Hardeman County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 2 pm.

Mayor Julian McTizic congratulated and recognized Ms. Lisa Raines who was recently selected as Tennessee School Nurse Administrator of the Year. {read more here}

Public Comments – no one was present to speak.

Standing Committee Reports were given by the following departments; Electric, Utilities, Fire, Police, Parks and Recreation, Streets and Sanitation, Library, Compliance/Zoning, and Tourism/Community Development.

The Fire Department report included 32 fire calls, of which 25 were in City and 7 were in the County.

Police Chief Mike Jones presented the following reports:

Calls for service – 504

Citations – 127

Accidents – 28 (9 injury, 19 property damage)

Arrests – 14 (1 juvenile, 13 adult)

Old Business:

A public hearing was held regarding the rezoning of 312 East Market Street. No one from the public was present to speak.

The Council approved the Second Reading of Ordinance 2023-007: Amend Official Zoning Map for Property Located at 312 E. Market Street, with only Councilwoman Caroline Miller voting against the rezoning on the first and second reading. {Watch more to see why Councilwoman Miller voted against the rezoning at the 31 min mark in the video.}

The Council approved of a 6 month extension on the 2022 Mack Side-Arm Automated Refuse Collection Truck Loan.

New Business

The Council approved holding a Public Hearing for the Proposed Annexation of Territory into the City of Bolivar on Monday. February 12, 2024, at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The citizens will ultimately decide on the annexation when the item is placed on the ballot during a future election.

There will be a Public Hearing for the City’s Intent to Apply for the FY2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) at City Hall on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. The City intends to use these funds for a new fire truck.
