Caleb Minter Wows at The Apollo and Advances in Amateur Night Competition

Bolivar native Caleb Minter spent the evening of Wednesday, October 11, 2023, in the Big Apple performing at the Amateur Night at The Apollo. The long running amateur talent competition has a long history of more than 70 years and is recognized for launching the careers of notable entertainers that include Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross, and Lauryn Hill, just to name a few. Minter was rehearsed and ready for his opportunity that could take him to the next level in his music career.

Minter sang James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Word” with ease and flair, of which he is known. In the audience he was supported by his mother and bonus dad, Ruby and Bobby Harvey, and his godmother Elverna Cain. Ruby Harvey went live on Facebook, so family and friends across the country, including his father and bonus mother, Clarence and Cassandra Minter, could tune in and watch the competition virtually. Although Minter had much support from family and friends, there was still someone special missing.

“Seeing Caleb perform on this historic stage made us very proud. He deserves good things as he has persevered and put in the work for many years,” said Harvey. “Caleb has been spreading love by singing and encouraging others to love each other as he chose love over hate after his only biological sibling, Clarence Minter, Jr., was murdered in 2014.”

Minter’s brother is always a constant on his mind. In 2015, he dedicated his first music video, “Gone Too Soon,” in his memory. Although not physically here, Caleb believes his brother is always with him.

After all the contestant performances, Caleb Minter stood in line with the other nine and waited patiently for his name to be called. His name was called and Caleb was named as the second place winner.

“I feel extremely grateful to do what I love in hopes to inspire someone,” said Minter.

Caleb will advance to the finalist round, which will be on November 15, 2023. The winners from that round will compete at the grand finale on November 22, 2023, for a prize of $20,000 and a possible record deal.

Ruby had an endearing message to share with her son that expresses her love and confidence she has in him.

“Caleb, you were meant to stand out and not fit in! You are doing just that. Shout out to you for advancing to the next level at The Apollo tonight. Your perseverance is paying off. Look at God! I love you, my talented, loving, and respectful son. Keep pushing,” said Harvey.
