City of Bolivar Holds October Council Meeting {video}
The City of Bolivar held its monthly meeting on Monday, October 7, 2024. All council members were present.
The meeting was opened with prayer and the pledge to the flag. The Council approved the minutes from the September 9, 2024, regularly scheduled City Council meeting. The Mayor announced the Bolivar BBQ Blowout and Music Festival will be on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26, 2024. City offices will be closed on Monday, November 11, 2024, in observance of Veteran’s Day.
The Council rescheduled the November 11, 2024, City Council Meeting to Monday, November 18, 2024, due to the Veterans Day holiday.
Mayor Julian McTizic proclaimed October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month to raise public awareness of disability employment. He recognized a new City of Bolivar employee, Harry, who was hired through a partnership with Mental Health & Developmental Services (MHDS).
Public Comments: no citizens spoke during public comments.
Standing Committee Reports were given by the following departments: Electric, Utilities, Fire, Police, Parks and Recreation, Streets and Sanitation, Library, Compliance/Zoning, Tourism/Community Development, and Historic Planning.
Chief Price’s fire report included 11 calls in the City and 11 calls in the County.
Chief Jone’s police report included 629 calls for service, 185 citations issued, 20 accidents (three with injuries) and 34 arrests made (three were juveniles). Life saver awards were presented to officers whose efforts saved the lives of community members. {read more about the LifeSaver Awards here}
Old Business:
The Council approved the 2023 LPRF Sand Beach Lake contract, which is for the construction of the pavilion, amphitheater and boat ramp. The Council received six bids for the construction portion of the project and unanimously approved the lowest bid, which was from Grinder, Taber, and Grinder for the amount of $568,948.27. The bids for the purchase of the pavilion are expected to be voted on by the Council next month. {read more about the improvements planned for Sand Beach Lake here}
Mayor McTizic gave an update on the Pleasant Creek Run multi-use YMCA sportsplex. {read more about the proposal here} {watch the update at the 30 minute mark in the video}
New Business:
The Council approved the retirement and transfer of K-9 officer Jules.
The Council approved contributing up to $22,500 from the general fund for the purchase of two SkyCop cameras and remodeling a room for a criminal investigation office at the Police Department. The remaining funds for the purchases will come from the drug fund and LESO.
