Coming Together Empowerment Brunch Held to Empower Young People
The Coming Together Empowerment Brunch (CTEB) is a vision that four young people had to empower their peers to “become who they want to be and come together as a community”. Jaliea Jones, Jamarius Jones, Shania Shaw, and Torrin Sullivan want to provide Fayette County and all surrounding communities with the opportunity to support young people in an environment other than sports as another means towards a successful future.
“The County can always be seen in a negative light the majority of the time unless we all come together for sports,” said Ms. Shaw, who also noted what she shared in the article were the collective ideas of all four of them. “We wanted to bring the community together to bring light to situations and not always tear them [young people] down. Yes, we must acknowledge problems, but they also need to be worked on and fixed as well.”
The team of four plans for the brunch to be an open and transparent opportunity for learning and discussion. Some of the areas of focus will be on the topics of togetherness, emotional bondage, and peer pressure. Although the target age is 18 years and older, she noted what will be covered can benefit people of all ages, because the topics are relevant to everyone.
“We struggle with the idea of togetherness. Also, mental health is not only in our community, but this most definitely will be discussed. Our mental health is important,” said Ms. Shaw, who shared more about the topics that will be covered. “We always have people who feel pressured to do things just to have friendships, so we want to discuss this to encourage people that it’s okay to say no to things they know aren’t right.”
Jaliea Jones, Jamarius Jones, Shania Shaw, and Torrin Sullivan will each bring their personal academic and professional experience to CTEB that will benefit attendees. Ms. Jones has a degree in exercise science from Middle Tennessee State University; Mr. Jones has a degree in sports broadcasting from Austin Peay State University; Ms. Shaw has a degree in business administration from Tennessee State University; and Mr. Sullivan has a degree in computer aided design from Southwest Community College. Two of the four are self-employed and will also share that side of business.
The Coming Together Empowerment Brunch will be held at The Venue in Somerville on Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and are available to purchase online through Wednesday, January 3, 2024, and at the door the day of the event.
