D.A. Mark Davidson Speaks on Scams and Elder Abuse at Bolivar Library

District Attorney General Mark Davidson and Special Council Amy Weirich spoke at the Bolivar-Hardeman County Library about scams and elder abuse.

District Attorney General Mark Davidson spoke at the Sassy Seniors bi-monthly meeting at the Bolivar-Hardeman County Library on Tuesday. Community members came out and learned the warning signs of elder abuse and how to spot a scam through the ScamStop initiative.

It was said that approximately one in 10 Americans aged 60-plus have experienced some form of elder abuse, although only one in 24 cases is reported. In 2021, 37 billion dollars was stolen from our elderly population in Tennessee. Elder abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, or financial. Warning signs are isolation, weak support systems, weight loss, and deteriorating living conditions.

“We need everybody’s eyes and ears working together to protect the next victim,” said Special Council Amy Weirich.

Tennessee state law requires reporting of suspected abuse of a vulnerable or elderly adult. Call (888) APS-TENN (277-8366) to make an anonymous report, or click here.

Sassy Seniors is a bi-monthly senior citizen program at the Bolivar-Hardeman County Library. Each month, unique challenges and activities for both the mind and body are offered. Contact Hannah Thompson at hthompson.bhcl@gmail.com or call the library at (731) 658-3436 for more information.
