This year, the Tennessee Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of our state poem titled “Oh Tennessee, My Tennessee” by presenting posters and a short lesson plan to elementary schools. Hatchie Chapter DAR member Deana Sain presented posters of our Tennessee state poem to local school leaders this week.

“Oh Tennessee, My Tennessee” was written by Naval Admiral William Porter Lawrence while imprisoned at the Hỏa Lò prison (the Hanoi Hilton) in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was designated and adopted as the official state poem by Public Chapter 111 of the 88th General Assembly in 1973. If you would like additional information about our state poem, please e-mail Hatchie Chapter TNDAR at hatchie@tndar.org.
