Dexter McCluster Promotes Football Skills and Physical Activity at Camp

NFL running back Dexter McCluster returned to the Town of Whiteville on Saturday, June 3, 2023, for the Annual Youth Football Camp that was held at Whiteville City Park. This was the third year the camp had been held in Hardeman County.

McCluster typically hosts similar football camps in the Nashville area and was drawn to Hardeman County after learning about the City of Whiteville Mayor Gene Bowden’s effort to offer activities to children in Hardeman County.

“My son-in-law (Tony Johnson) and his wife, Kimberely, (my daughter) own a minor league basketball team in Nashville. They told Dexter what I was trying to do to assist the youth in Hardeman County, and he agreed to help,” said Town of Whiteville Mayor Gene Bowden. “The purpose of the camp is to inspire young people and inform them of the importance of physical activity for good health, and to be better athletes. It also creates a sense of community.”

There were 125 children who attended the camp, and they did activities that focused on speed, agility, footwork, and teamwork. Bowden shared one of the many highlights from the day.

“There was an extraordinary catch by one of the campers, who was also named the MVP of the event,” said Bowden.

Mayor Bowden wants to thank the local businesses who graciously provided water, sport drinks, and other refreshments for the camp.
