4-H Piggy Bank Pageant is Here, Vote for Your Favorite!
It is an exciting time of year – the Piggy Bank Pageant is here! Kids across Tennessee will be learning about saving money and working hard crafting handmade piggy banks to enter UT Extension’s annual Piggy Bank Pageants.
The contests, which begin locally, culminate in a statewide contest in April each year. The yearly contest attracts more than 2,500 handmade banks from kids ages pre-K through twelfth grade statewide.
Along with encouraging kids to enter hand crafted Piggy Banks in local competitions, UT Extension agents deliver lessons about the importance of smart saving and making saving a habit.
“We just can’t underestimate the importance of teaching young people the necessity of saving money,” says Dr. Ann Berry, Professor and Consumer Economics Specialist with UT Extension. “Young people who make saving a regular habit early in their lives have a real head start on achieving financial security as an adult.”
In Hardeman County, 73 young people entered local Piggy Bank Pageants through their 4-H club meetings. Visitors to the Hardeman County Extension Open House judged entries in March selecting winners in each division. The creator of the winning bank in each grade division received a gift card and a bag of goodies compliments of CB&S Bank. Winners in six age categories will represent the county in the state contest scheduled for the week of April 17, through April, 24, 2023. “Best of the Best Award” winners will be selected by staff and faculty of the UT Extension Family and Consumer Sciences department in Knoxville. People’s Choice Award winners will be decided based on greatest number of online votes received at http://voteforthepig.tennessee.edu/.
