Fayette County Schools Implement Clear Backpack Policy

Somerville, Tennessee – On Thursday, July 7, the Fayette County Board of Education voted to amend a policy promoting safety and security in schools and at all on campus functions. All Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) will begin the process of implementing a clear backpack policy when students return to school on August 8, 2022. Clear backpacks will be highly recommended for all students during the 2022-23 school year. They will become mandatory for the 2023-24 academic year.

“The safety of our students is of the utmost importance. This policy will increase security while also providing Fayette County families the time and flexibility necessary to find and purchase these bags,” Fayette County School Board Chairman Wendell Wainwright shared.

In addition to the daily recommendation for students, attendees of events on FCPS school campuses, including sporting events, extracurricular activities, and other assemblies, will only be able to bring clear backpacks or bags into the event. The only exception to this will be small clutches that don’t exceed 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches in size. These clutches will be checked by hand upon entry.

“The safety of students, their families, and all of the community that attends events in support of our children is our top priority. This policy will help to ensure that no restricted items find their way into our events,” said Superintendent Dr. Versie R. Hamlett.

Major retailers across Fayette County have been notified of this recommendation, so their supplies may be adjusted to accommodate for the demand. Due to availability issues that may occur, families are also encouraged to check online sources.
