Hardeman and Fayette Youth Invited to an Educational Day of Shotgun Sports

Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Scholastic Clay Target Program invites Tennessee’s youth to an educational day of shotgun sports on Saturday, November 11, 2023. The statewide Recruiting Day provides an opportunity for children, ranging from nine years old through 12th grade, to learn and engage in shotgun sports for free.

“Trying a new sport can be intimidating for children and their parents, but Recruiting Day is designed to eliminate those worries and replace them with excitement and confidence,” said J.W. Worthen, director of programs. “Accessibility is important to the program. We want anyone that’s interested in participating to enjoy this experience so all necessary equipment will be provided to them for Recruiting Day.”

No previous experience is needed. Beginners will be guided through proper firearm safety and receive instruction from a highly-trained coach before having the chance to hit practice targets of their own. Interested youth must have a legal guardian present to participate.

“Parents have the opportunity to involve their youth in a sport that teaches safe firearm handling, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork all while participating in an environment of healthy competition,” said Ashley Tone, Tennessee SCTP manager. “We encourage parents to bring their children to one of our 15 Recruiting Day locations and let them discover a new passion for shotgun sports.”

Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) develops athletes who win national titles and provides students with opportunities to earn college scholarships. The program operates under Tennessee Wildlife Federation, one of the state’s leading policy, engagement and stewardship nonprofits dedicated to conserving the state’s wildlife and natural resources. Shooting sports play an essential role in supporting and introducing youth to conservation.
