Hardeman County 4-H Reporter Londyn Lindsay Shares a Recap from Congress
Photos and story courtesy of Londyn Lindsay.
My name is Londyn Lindsay and I am a proud ninth grade student of Bolivar Central High School (BCHS). March 10 – 13, 2024, I had the greatest opportunity of my life to attend the 77th Annual Tennessee 4-H Congress in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. I was accompanied on the trip by two other students from BCHS, Eric Malena, Jr. and Madasyn Horton; Catherine Gibson, a home school student; and also our wonderful volunteers, Mrs. Canedra Henderson and Ms. Winter Griggs. We each had to write an essay prepared on the Congress theme, “Tennessee 4-H: Find Your Missing Piece” to attend the Tennessee 4-H Congress.
The 4-H Congress consisted of many activities that different students participated in during the Conference. They were Elections and Congress Officers, Speaking Contest, History Bowl, Know your Government, Essay Contest, Poster Contest, and Citizenship and Leadership Competition. During our downtime, we got to visit the Nashville Zoo and experience the downtown Nashville scenery. I really enjoyed the time I spent learning about all of the great information from the 77th Annual Tennessee 4-H Congress.
Tennessee 4-H Congress is an activity that supports the Citizenship project and helps 4-H’ers develop the life skill of responsible citizenship. Responsible citizenship is an individual’s demonstration of love and devotion in response to duties, rights, and privileges as a member of a community or country. Citizen involvement in government is the only way to keep government responsive to the people. I had the opportunity to oppose the Bill No. 0004, which stated that Agriculture classes in high school would be made mandatory for graduation requirements. It was so exciting to see how we got to vote on the bills and I got to sit in Representative Johnny Shaw’s seat in the Tennessee State Capitol building during our voting on the different bills. We got to see when each 4-H candidate voted for and against the bills. Overall, I thought it was a great experience to feel the real live action of how they vote for Bills in the great state of Tennessee. We would like to thank Mr. Gary Rodgers as our 4-H Extension Agent lll and County Director for this great opportunity on this wonderful experience.
