Hardeman County Schools Moves First Day of School to August 2
The Hardeman County School Board unanimously voted in acceptance of the proposed calendar for the 2023-2024 school year.
Some of the major changes include adding Veterans Day as a school holiday and taking the whole week off for Thanksgiving break. These changes resulted in needing to move the start date of school back to August 2, 2023, to complete the required days of instruction.
During the January meeting, school board member Patricia Carter questioned why the first day is always a half day stating that every year she receives phone calls from parents saying, “by the time they get their child up, get them ready, get on the bus, they’re turning around to come back home”.
School Board member Gene Ross explained the reason he thinks it’s done this way, “It allows the schools to see what they’ve got that first day and then some time that afternoon to make adjustments”.
Director Christy Smith reminded everyone that there is no calendar that is going to make everyone happy, but they have received positive feedback with this one.
