Hardeman County Schools Responds to Citizens Concerns Regarding Public Comments

The Hardeman County Schools responded to an inquiry from Hatchie Press regarding citizens’ concerns about addressing the board during the public comment time at the monthly board meetings. The prepared statement shared with Hatchie Press is as follows:

“Hardeman County Schools is committed to transparency and accountability, but also to ensuring that board meetings are conducted responsibly, fairly, and in compliance with state law. Recently there have been requests to be placed on the agenda that have not complied with Tennessee law and board policies. It is important to clarify how public comment and agenda requests are governed under Tennessee Code Annotated (T.C.A.) and board policy. Under the Tennessee Open Meetings Act (T.C.A. § 8-44-101 et seq.), the public has the right to attend and observe meetings of governing bodies. In addition, T.C.A. § 49-2-203 grants local boards of education the authority to adopt policies and procedures for the orderly conduct of business, including rules for public participation and agenda setting. These statutes work together to ensure that public engagement is welcomed, but also conducted responsibly and within the boundaries of the law.

To protect the integrity of board business and ensure compliance with law:

  • Public Comment: In accordance with T.C.A. § 8-44-102(b)(1), the public may observe and provide comment at designated times. Community members who wish to speak must follow the board’s established sign-up procedures. This process ensures fairness, prevents disruptions, and provides a reasonable opportunity for input while safeguarding against misinformation that could damage the district or its stakeholders.

The board welcomes community voices, but those voices must follow the proper procedures and protocols that are in place to maintain productive and orderly meetings.”

Hardeman County citizens are encouraged to attend the next monthly board meeting on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will also be livestreamed on the Hatchie Press YouTube channel. Watch the full August 2025 school board meeting and the September 2025 school board meeting.
