Hatchie Chapter DAR Presents Challenge Coins to Bolivar Central High School Seniors
By Sharon Venuti
The Hatchie Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is proud to announce the award of the DAR Challenge Coin to local seniors of Bolivar Central High School. Ariyana Reaves, Christyonna Douglas, Ron’Tavius Buggs, Taniah Smith, and Derreal Bass have committed to service in the National Guard and Dakota Hubbard has committed to service in the U.S. Marines.
Challenge coins are given to honor individuals for special achievements or to observe a special event. The presentation of the coin began as a military tradition; however other organizations such as government agencies, first responders, and even White House officials present challenge coins as well. The coins are usually inscribed with the unit or organization’s insignia and may also include their motto or images of a significant event or place. The “challenge” is to carry the coin on your person and present it when challenged. Traditionally, the last person to present their coin or the person who does not have it on them is obliged to buy a round of drinks.
Hatchie Chapter presented the DAR coin to these students to thank them for their commitment to the community and our nation. We hope it will be the first of many coins that they earn during their careers and that the DAR coin will serve as a reminder over the years of when they chose to serve in the United States Armed Forces.
