Hickory Valley Celebrates Fourth of July in Spirited Fashion
The Town of Hickory Valley celebrated Independence Day in a way it only knows how to do with its annual Fourth of July Celebration. Despite being a small town in Hardeman County, Tennessee, the citizens of the town and those from surrounding areas came out big for a tradition that has been going on for almost 20 years.
“We started holding the parade in 2006. It has been an annual project for the Hickory Valley Women’s Club and the Hickory Valley Fire Department since then,” said Betsy Jones, who has been a Hickory Valley resident since 2000. “We welcome anyone who wants to join in the fun.”
Responding to the invitation, a variety of participants lined up to drive, ride horses, ride bikes, and more in the parade to show their town pride as well as the love for country – the United States of America – wearing the colors red, white, and blue.
“Over the years, we have seen floats of the Statue of Liberty, antique cars, tractors, horse drawn carriages, and babies in all kinds of decorated wagons,” said Ms. Jones.

The heat did not manage to hamper the spirit of the day. As they have done for the past 18 years, the celebration next moved to City Hall where a potluck meal was served. The Town of Hickory Valley provided burgers, hot dogs, and soft drinks, and participants were asked to bring the rest.
“It was really a fun day in spite of the heat,” said Ms. Jones.
