Jackson State Expands Free Career Training Program Through Grant
Jackson State Community College (JSCC) Workforce Solutions will offer additional workforce industry training beginning September 9, 2024. Once again, UpSkill Mid-South will sponsor all tuition and material costs, allowing students to earn free industry credentials to help them enter the workforce or make career changes.
“Our first cohort of students was a great success, so much so that the team at UpSkill Mid-South wanted to see us host another cohort of students,” said Tom Pigg, Executive Director of Workforce Solutions. “The program speaks for itself, allowing students to earn industry-recognized credentials such as OSHA 30, FANUC Certified Robot Operator, and more. Our last cohort earned these credentials at no out-of-pocket cost, so it’s an excellent opportunity to get ahead if you are making a career pivot or looking to earn college credit for our Engineering Systems Technology program.”
The consecutive three-phase training begins September 9, 2024, and will run through December 12, 2024, at JSCC’s Ned R. McWherter Center, providing 225 hours of industry certification training. The second cohort will be offered as evening classes three nights a week for 14 weeks, allowing participants to work around their daily work schedules.
As part of the training, students will also be eligible to roll training hours into 15 hours of college course credit towards JSCC’s Engineering Systems Technology degree. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the college’s award-winning Advanced Maintenance Technician (AMT) work cooperative, comprised of a consortium of 34 workforce industry partners.
The 14-week, 225-hour training will provide participants with essential skills to be successful in the workforce. Some subjects covered in the ten classes include:
- Work Ethic certification
- Digital skills (file management, software applications, communication, internet navigation/safety, data analytics, generative AI, cybersecurity)
- OSHA 30 safety training for general industry
- Tool Identification
- Mechatronics
- Robotics
As part of the training, students will also be eligible to roll training hours into up to 15 hours of college course credit towards JSCC’s Engineering Systems Technology degree.
Eligibility
- Individuals over 18 who are unemployed.
- Individuals who are underemployed, earning less than $15 per hour, and work 30 hours or less per week.
- Must reside in West Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, or Northwestern Arkansas regions.
